For every royal person who has disappeared, presumed murdered, in mysterious circumstances, there has been someone, often more than one person, who has claimed his or her identity. Yet never have so many claimants come forward as those who have asserted themselves to be members of the Imperial Family of Russia, supposedly murdered by their Bolshevik guards in July 1918, after the revolution and the outbreak of civil war. There have been no fewer than fifteen women claiming to be the youngest daughter of the Tsar, Anastasia. ​​But at the centre of a controversy which has raged for over half a century, stood one woman named Anna Anderson. ​​
